New Members

The three sites I run average about 15 new members a day each. I cull them once every two weeks... With usually two or three actual humans remaining of each fortnight's applications. The rest are, sadly, usually bot accounts that will auto-post tons of crap if allowed. I do lock all accounts from posting until approved, and all non-active accounts removed if not heard from (via direct pm or email, not just open postings in the forums) in the first two weeks. But the communities I manage are small, the largest of which is only a couple hundred members. Even there, the active participants are only about 3% of the total approved membership. The remainder are mostly lurkers: folks who pop in to see what's being discussed, decide they have no useful thoughts to share on a given matter and leave. They check back in a month to see what's new. The clean-up chores take me about ten minutes per site, every two weeks. So half an hour with a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning before flying and checking in here to see Glenn's latest rant on Carabooboo products.

<LMAO> My 'ranting' days on Cara-oops may be at an end . I've been so pleased with their latest products that I'm starting to wonder if they've gone and done something stupid - like making really good airplanes . Now, they still do really dumb things on the light machines, which still drives me nuts, but if they ever get that together, wow. They could be the aces in the hole.

Uh, you're in it, it's called "new members".  Have a go.    No really, it's great that you're here, this is a tremendous place, it just takes a while.  We are a bit free-form and elastic, do ya see, so formal introductions ain't really done.  Say hello, post a few things, hang about a bit, there are some very knowledgeable folks here and all in all the place is a gold mine of flying knowledge, both real and simulated and 'round the bend humour.

I know it seems obvious to you'all but it didn't really to me. When you're new to a place, the icons, the format everything looks different. Seeing now that it's a sticky, well yeah, makes sense now, me, being squirrely, just started reading, and what I saw was a thread about new members coming and going or coming and not even continuing. So not thinking it was a introduction section, AND seeing no introductions, I thought I'd make the suggestion, still being fresh meat and new eyes eh?
