My evening's flying consisted of more updating than flying, but fun to be had anyway.
Orbx has released a new Global Freeware airplane pack (North America pack #15) and a new stand-alone freeware airport (with an installer for P3D2, EO49 - Laufenselden, Germany) and a new Library set. So once I got all that in, I figured I ought to see at least one of these, and I decided on visiting Laufenselden.
I switched the FTX Central program to EU, then loaded up P3D2. Now, I don't have the FTX 'Global' base set, nor the Global 'Vector' add-on, and of course I don't have (since it hasn't been released yet) the EU Land Class add-on. I understand this airport is designed to fit seamlessly with all those products, so I expected a few anomalies with having only the stock P3D stuff and whatever Orbx stuff I got by turning on the EU switch. But my visit to Laufenselden wasn't bad at all.
Here's a series of images taken at Laufenselden. Click the image to view the full-sized screenshot at 1920x1200.
1) On the active runway. Which I figure is going to be the active regardless of wind direction, since I wouldn't want to try taking off into that tree-covered hillside behind my aircraft...
2) Take-off was a bit interesting, since the airport sits in a little bowl. The rise at the s/w end is deceptively high, and has a road crossing the end of the runway with a farm trailer (?) or something nearby. Not to mention the imposing windmills dead ahead. This shot is taken after having made a 180 turn to the left after take off, flying over what I presume to be the town of Laufenselden.
3) Another from the same side, but now as I make a turn onto a high base, with a better view of the windmills.
4)Looking down at the airport, with the tree covered hill close by and the road crossing the far end of the runway visible.
5) The entire airport. Just in front of the aircraft's strut is the road crossing the very end of the runway.
6) Windmills out the front window... I made another circuit and landed opposite of the direction I took off. I didn't like the way that hill stuck up on the n/e end of the airport.
7) Parked, chocked and flagged.
8) Always neat to see the little squirrel running around...
The last shot shows the most glaring thing that caught my eye... My aircraft was sitting a couple inches of the ground, and the squirrel was walking on air. I'm sure the Orbx crew would spot other differences obvious to them, but since I don't have the Global add-on set, this is how it looks to me.
And yeah, taking a 182T might not have been a really good idea for this small an airport.
