Back in those learning days this was the training ground. One VOR and full power LFR at McGrath and low power LFR's at Farewell and Minchumina. A map, Sectional or WAC, was your primary navaid - keep the terrain looking like the map. Wish I'd had a helicopter back then but I was a few grand short. At my six, Farewell alongside Sheep (Dall) Creek with the westside foothills of the Alaska Range. This one illustrates how much the 'Trees HD' addon does for the LC scenery. Thirteen miles west of McGrath, Mt Takotna - had a USAF GCI radar up there in my day, now that of the Anchorage ARTCC. Moose, Griz and Wolf used to populate the Innoko Valley. The Ophir airport still serves an active gold mining community. Following the Iditarod Trail below Ophir - there's a used Pacer right gear leg in a tree near here. About thirty degrees right of the setting sun and fifty some miles is the mighty Yukon - but I'm not signed off for night yet.

Splendid snaps, Dave! That certainly is a, ummm, "colourful" helicopter.
