Since Orbx started with their humungous sceneries, I've bee blythely adding one after another. Yesterday my Coolsky DC9(sort of a PMDG lite) said "FSX can't load" at the end of the 'fly now' loading period. Reducing my scenery settings didn't help but my other stuff does OK so I'm not completely over the edge yet. Does 'unchecking' scenery library items not being used help? What about other steps I could take to reduce load SIZE (load time is OK)?

Seems this is "the month". Man. Not sure why the CS DC9 should give you any sort of warning of that nature. I've got a pretty sizable scenery set in my library and while it's not really quick loading, it does ok. How much room do you have left on your FS HD? If you are within 25% of the max allowable, I'd say that's the place to start. The disk might be able to hold more, but FS can't seem to deal with that. Check that first and if you are within 25% (I'd go even higher than that - i.e. 50% if the disk is not that big).

Starting with aircraft textures - only helps load time but I have liveries out the gazoo (there's a tricky surgery). My next thought was, if I'm not using certain sceneries for a flight would unchecking (in the library) help total load volume which seems to be the problem with the DC9. Re my FSX drive (500 gb) - 126 left of 465, exactly (or close) 25%. New and bigger?

Yeah, unchecking some sceneries will help, sure. FSX "inventories" EVERY file associated with all content listed in the Scenery.cfg file ... whether that area is being used, ("active"), or not. I use the SceneryConfig Editor program to put my sceneries in "groups", that way it's really easy to disable the regions where you're not flying. There's also one other thing you could do, if you haven't already. In the FSX.cfg, under the MAIN section add the following, DisablePreload=1 FSX always loads the default flight before anything else and that adds significantly to load times and volume.
A bigger hard drive, would be a good idea. It's not just FSX that has trouble if the hard drive is too full, the entire system will struggle with loading and running programs. 20%-25% free is pretty much as low as you want to go, though I have heard 10%-15% from some of the more tech savvy people I know.

Fritz's comments are exactly on IMO Dave. I think you're a bit too low on HD space to be honest and the issues you are having sure sounds like that's the problem. Try getting rid of some bigger sceneries using methods that Fritz outlined and that may give you your answer.
@don - when you say IS3 isn't loading, what's it doing or indicating?

I will have to look when I go home. Here is what I wrote on their support forum.
"I purchased IS2 back on March 26 2011. It was upgraded to 3.04. All was fine. I had to reinstall my entire sim due to some faulty scenery. I have tried several times to reinstall the IS3, but no joy. I then tried to reinstall IS2 thinking it would upgrade to IS3. No good. I have gotten new keys, the whole nine yards. I now tried to install IS2, and I am told it cannot install due to a missing file. Something is not right. Now IS2 is no longer available. I need to download IS3 and install it. Is that possible? My info is for the original IS2. What can be done about this? Thank you."
