Finally got around to trying out Opus with Rex4 textures (no softies). Looked at the Anchorage NWS discussion and they said mostly cloudy, convective activity up to FL200 with scattered showers. Here's what Opus generated. The metar said SCT020 BKN060 and that's what I got. Lots of buildups - a real weather engine. About 170 over the Big Lake (KBGQ) vortac - no hypixia. Level at FL200, forecast tops looks good.

My goodness, that looks outstanding! And it appears to render well out towards the horizon. I'm impressed. But tell me, please, how are the transitions over a long distance flight?

Haven't done one yet and I'd have to study up - too technical yet for me . Bought this mainly for the camera functions, so much superior to Ezdok with none of the agony - the weather engine is a bonus.

I've been thinking of getting Ezdoc for sometime but keep putting it off because so many people say that it is complicated and difficult to install and configure. If Opus performs better, well, ... Well Ezdok is $35 and still in a very 'alpha/beta' stage while Opus, at $50, offers a very user friendly camera utility plus, what appears to be, an excellent weather generator with maps. It was a bit complicated, at the get go, for this old mind but, once the bulb lights, it all makes sense. The support, mostly on 'Simforums', is fabulous.

You can import your flight plan (.pln file) into Opus and it will pull the weather data for your trip. I've found there are some bumps along the way when weather observed at one station is radically different from the previous, but there are smoothing options that help. This is a short flight from a ranch strip to KJAC as an example... I create a flight plan using PlanG. Open Opus, load the plan, close Opus. Open P3D. Load my saved plan. Once in my selected aircraft at the airport, pause the sim in windowed mode. Open Opus (I have it set to automatically minimize, Opus also controls my TrackIR.) Allow the weather to load in and stabilize while doing pre-flight functions. Fly my intended plan, enjoying the real-world weather as depicted by Opus, using REX 4 Texture Direct + Soft Clouds and various FTX/Orbx sceneries. Tends to make for flight sim eye-gasms ...

I was not aware of that at all! It sounds stomp down amazing. I don't have REX 4 textures, just REX Essential Overdrive. Are the Soft Clouds compatible with Overdrive?

Wouldn't swear to it but got a hunch that, since 'Soft Clouds' is a texture addon, Rex made it to work with all their texture products.

I'm pretty sure Soft Clouds will work with Essential.

I guess I should ask over at REX before I go for the Soft Clouds.
