Got a pleasant surprise when I went to update my FTX/Global Freeware Packs list of airports this morning (a small chore I do to keep a complete airport listing updated as new airport packs are released.) My home airport (KMKT) in south-central Minnesota is one of the airports in NA Pack 13! Yay! You do not need to have FTX Global installed to use these freeware airport packs (I still haven't got Global or Vector myself.) They install with the latest triple installers for FSX, P3D1 and/or P3D2. Here's a couple screens of how my home airport looks with the freeware installed (feel free to visit KMKT without the pack installed to see how bland it is in stock FSX/P3D2.) Here's what KMKT looks like with the freeware pack (and the latest Orbx Libraries) installed: I have to add, this is a very close to real-life rendering of what the airport is like. The Auto-gen stuff surrounding the airport is over-done, as there is only a small industrial complex near the airport, otherwise it's surrounded by corn and soy bean fields. And not nearly as encroached upon by housing as the sim would have you believe. But the airport rendition itself is quite accurate.

Oh, in case anyone is interested, here's the link to the Google Docs document that has all the FTX Global freeware airports listed: Google Docs LinkYou can download the file as a .pdf for easy viewing/printing; simple click "File" -> "Download As..." -> and select which format you want the file to be (.docx, .odt, .pdf, .txt, .rtf)

That's quite the improvement! Most of their freebies are very well done. See my post earlier. Thanks very much for the link! That will come in very handy for sure, especially when you have to disable some airports in AEC.

Looks nice. Too bad they only work with Global. BP;)

No, you do NOT need Global, as far as I know. Looks like Sandy is running it without. I do have it and they are really good in that, but Sandy's looks fine as well. Have a look on their site - might be ok without.

Yeah, better have a look. I may have spoken too soon. I was just there and they say it is for FTX Global. I can't find anything definitive that says it can be used without it but Sandy did say, "You do not need to have FTX Global installed to use these freeware airport packs (I still haven't got Global or Vector myself.)". I'm guessing you don't have to have it, but again I can't find anything really definite. Might still be worth a try.

I just installed one and it seems to work fine. I haven't looked at all the airports, but Wheeler Downtown worked fine.

Cool. Probably for the majority of them, they will work just fine.

These are designed to work especially well with Global and Vector, but they will work without either add-on. Having Global and/or Vector is NOT a prerequisite to installing these free-ware airport packs. In a couple cases you may notice some elevation issues in an installation without Global and/or Vector. That's the price of freeware. But the vast majority of these airports work splendidly over stock FSX/P3D2. I highly recommend them to add some nice details to otherwise boring and drab stock airports.
Please note that the latest Orbx Libraries are required in order to have all the various 'stuff' show up in these freeware airports. Probably not a big deal for most here as I am confident anyone reading this is running at least one Orbx scenery and is familiar with the Library files.

By all means, use whichever list suits your fancy. In defense of the method I chose to share the same info as Taph: - You can save the Google docs version in a number of formats depending on your needs. - The Orbx forums won't let you edit a post past a given time. That means attached files, or even links to old files, cannot be easily removed. With Google Docs, all the editing is done away from Orbx's direct touch. Now I can use one link to share and access the file, and update it as needed. - I can also add other folks as editors, so the updates can be made more swiftly (if that's actually an issue...) Taph's list was up before I put mine together, Kudos to him for getting there first. But we get our info the same way: from the release announcements. AFAIK Taph isn't part of the Orbx heirarchy, simply an enthusiast like you or I (though I'm probably wrong and he's the owner's brother or something.)

Unfortunately the CYTZ, Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport does not work properly with UTX Canada, which I use instead of Global Vector; you get two of all the FSX default Toronto landmarks (CN Tower etc.). I loaded up the Orbx bgl in ADE and sure enough they placed all the buildings that already existed in default; apparently Global Vector wiped out all the default Toronto landmarks so they had to replace them!
This is nothing new for Orbx; their PNW region wiped out all the default FSX ferry terminals in BC while UTX Canada didn't.
