Whilst painting my new C-402 I noticed a wee flange on the engine nacelle. It's on both sides of the nacelles and there is what looks to be keyhole or a plug just underneath it. Does anyone know what this does for you when it's at home?

I'm not sure about the plug underneath - could be an overflow or something like that. I do believe the appendage though, is designed to reduce turbulence where the wing meets the engine. I've seen that on quite a number of twins.

Googling shows it on a few but not all. Perhaps some aftermarket device to, as Glenn says, enhance airflow in that area - seems to dupe the wing camber.

DAMN! I wondered why I kept "running out of gas" on final all those times <LOL>
Fritz - propwash would be part of it. That's a fairly turbulent part of the airframe there because of turbulence off the engine nacelle and propwash, etc. My guess is that little "wing" helps smooth the air in that section and probably reduces the tendency for the wing to stall in that area prematurely. Now I am guessing a bit on all this, but it seems logical given the shape and the location. However, it may have more to do with the little "hole/plug/whatever" than I'm giving credit for. We have a couple of AME's in the hangar today I believe, so I'll ask one of them and see if they know for sure.

OK, just yakked with an AME here. It is for smoothing the airflow over the wing near the engine. It's not so much propwash that's the problem but simply air coming off the engine that gets broken up into eddies. This helps to cut down on the drag that you'll find there and may help a bit with preventing the inboard part of the wing from stalling prematurely.
