Which engine, Rolls-Royce or Merlin?
Rolls Royce designed the Merlin used in the Brit Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster to name some. When a Rolls test pilot was flying a Mustang he suggested they try a Merlin. Voila, a whole new fighter. Packard was initially licensed to manufacture them for Mustangs but the 51H had a Merlin made by Allison (GM) that produced 2100 hp with a state of the art automatic supercharger. Between wars so not many built and when Korea started they plugged in model D's 'til the jets were ready.
