Our company is trying to ship an ELT to a customer in another Province. They need this thing like, today, if not sooner. We call Air Canada and tell them what we have and can they ship it. They say yes, so we send it by cab to Toronto ($100 fare). Now this is considered "dangerous goods" because it has a battery in it, but nevertheless, one more battery in a commercial airplane shouldn't be any big deal. Besides, they said they could ship it out this afternoon. So it gets there, and they call our shipper to say it can't go. "Why not??" our shipper asks. "Because it has to go on a cargo airplane and we don't have one right now," replies Air Canada. "But you didn't say that over the phone. Why can't it go on a passenger flight?" "Because it's dangerous goods and we can't put something like this on an airplane with people on it," replies the AC agent.
Now, what part of this am I missing. You can't put an ELT on an airplane? We tried to explain to the agent that they already have one on board, and that one is ARMED. Didn't help. Now in a way I understand what they are saying - something that isn't part of their equipment causing a problem could make life difficult for Air Crash... errr Air Canada, in this case a battery. But really? An Emergency Locator Transmitter??? One that's designed specifically to go on an airplane and whichis was going to be installed in one so it could go flying this afternoon??
We have no shortage of computers. We have no shortage of people who operate them. We have no shortage of paperwork. What we DO have a massive shortage of, is common sense. Sheesh. I'll retire to bedlam now, thankyou.
