Can't say for sure Don. I'll let you know tonight, but I don't think it hurts it much, if at all. UTX certainly had an impact on my machine, but I think Vector is a bit easier on the system for whatever reason. I'll let you know tonight after a flight I have in mind . Nice shot Dave.

spud - is it Pilot's that are putting out OpenLC? AFAIK, only OpenLC Europe has been released and is now being reworked, so NA is still a long way off I would guess.

Just read at Orbx (from JV himself) that OpenLC Europe and NA are being worked on concurrently. That's good news and should speed things up a bit for NA.

OK - so first I need to install Global. That will give me world-wide textures. Then I instal Vector, which will give me accurate GIS layout (rivers, shorelines, inlets, spits, etc. Then when available, the landclass to detail it all up. Am I following this correctly? Oh yes, and if I wanted to, I could add in mesh at any point, correct?

So, for just a few hundred bucks you can spruce up an ancient sim. Too rich for my blood.

You got it Pontiac. Mesh is a good idea, but depending on where you are, you may or may not need it. If you don't have it, try it without first. To be honest, I'd look at FS Genesis again. I think they are selling off their stuff pretty cheap now and I think you can get it by country. I did hear where he pawned much of that stuff off though, so he may not have it anymore. Have a look anyway.

North American mesh at 19M is $77.95. That does not include Alaska. Alaska is at 38M, which from what I am reading is the same LOD as default. I am confused! LOL! That is a little pricey right now. The other two ORBX items come to roughly 150 bucks. That's $225 for better ground work. I think I'll have to plan for this at another date.It does look so much better though.

No performance hit on my system just much nicer scenery with Global and VECTOR running.

BP;) About Alaska mesh - after default I had FSGenesis, not bad but, after the Orbx ball started to roll, I got FSGlobal (Pilots) Ultimate Americas - the best. You want the textures to look like the map - gotta have the mesh. Right now FTX Global is the most expensive single item - texture replacement for the world. Get the mesh either concurrently or as soon as - all the bumps and pointy things. Vector is getting much better and makes it all look real; then there's the Land Class which puts the frosting on the cake, so to speak - certainly helped my 'fat ' scenery of Scotland.

I saw that PILOTS, but wasn't sure how good it was. I had never heard of it. Back to the car lot!

Nah, there's just no way I can spring for all that. Mebbe replace my FSGenesis mesh with the Pilot's Ultimate Americas but that'd be it. Unless I win a horse race or two.

Yeah, and I have to agree with Fritz, crash & Don. Had I not been buying this stuff incrementally when it came out, and instead having to get it in one lump package, there's no way I'd be doing it either. Crash makes a good point (but don't tell him I said that - his head will swell ) in that this is an aging sim that is on its way out. Eventually P3D will go 64 bit and the whole thing might well get reborn again, and most of this stuff we have won't work there in all likelihood. I won't be part of that "rebirth" so I guess what I have is what I have. Truth is though, as my photo business starts to really get into high gear once the winter snows start in earnest, my time for FS will be reduced to the point where I'll be wondering why I even have it on at times. The thought of that is making me think more than twice about any new purchases at this point, and I have just about everything in the way of scenery enhancements one can get for this sim. There's no question that FS of today is light years ahead of what we had in FS9 even, but the max potential of it has pretty much been reached. We're into a law of diminishing returns situation, so every new piece one buys for FSX has only marginally more value than the piece before it. So while I really like what Vector 1.2 has done, it remains to be seen just how much use I actually get out of it, which in turn makes me seriously question adding anything more that I haven't already paid for. It sure has been a great (and at times, not-so-great) run with this sim over the years, but I think given that almost everything costs more and more (freeware is but a drop in the bucket now compared with what it used to be) and while most payware is excellent quality, it feels like throwing good money after bad. If money is a bit hard to come by (and when isn't it), then the overall value is pretty hard to justify. We now return you to your regularly schedule programming .
