I was planning on introducing my new ops, Equinox Air Cargo, to everyone today, at the end of a long haul from Copenhagen (Fly Tampa) to Toronto (Fly Tampa) in the 777. I knew this was going to be a risky flight as I've heard that Toronto is very heavy on frames, and FT added a whole lot to that. Well, as I turned final, I got that sickening "DING" sound and sure enough, down it goes. I'm pretty sure that the only really bad location is Toronto (and I've heard explanations as to why, but I'm not sure I buy them), but that makes me very gun shy about doing long flights to enhanced airports at both ends. That, for all intents and purposes, all but rules out my new ops and my 747-400 purchase. Unfortunately there isn't a lot one can do. I'm not willing to turn down my scenery any further from what it is now (and it's not high, believe me!) and the default airports in non-fat regions are ugly beyond description so I don't want to use those. I'm not sure how much of this is FT though, because I've never had an issue of this sort at any Orbx airport; BUT, Orbx does smaller airports (you can get 737's into some but not anything much larger) and none of those flights are long haul. I am tempted though, to try something between Vancouver and Australia, but that would mean having to buy a fair amount of Australian stuff and if it didn't work out, that would be another waste of cash. I have toyed with getting a new rig, but that doesn't really help because it's a memory thing and nothing will help with that when it comes to FSX. I'm using 16GB of ram now, but of course FSX can't use that. So, maybe back to the drawing board and stay with smaller stuff. That doesn't mean my ops can't work, and even some long haul stuff if I want go to between default airports (or default in fat regions), but we'll see. Disappointing end to a long flight though, although admittedly, I started the flight knowing this could be the outcome.

What about using a different base close to Toronto, and have Dashes run from there (or something!)? Would a different aircraft perform okay in Toronto?

Is it possible to save your flight part-way through and re-load? I'm not familiar with the PMDG stuff, and I know they have very complex modeling processes that might not save properly unless they have an external tool for it. FSX memory management is very poor, and doesn't unload memory properly as you progress. So the farther you fly with more complex stuff, your memory eventually fills until you get an OOM. I've seen some people discuss the saving as a way to re-load with a clean memory slate so you are good for your destination, but I don't know if that would be possible with PMDG.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Part of the attraction of Toronto (well, all of it actually) is that it's so well enhanced and perfect for long hauls and short. However, other than for use with the heavies, it's not a favourite destination of mine (I used to fly out of there IRL - not that fond of it <LOL>). And for reloading, that tends to kill the immersion for me and I'm not at all sure you can do that with PMDG aircraft. Surprisingly, I'm not really all that heartbroken over this. I'm finding that I'm just as happy, if not more so, in the light machines, so that's what I'm going back to. I'll have a couple of "regional" ops rather than one large one that spans continents. Appreciate the assistance and ideas, but I'm good . Thanks!

Well, I tried a flight out of FT Toronto to FT Montreal in the 737 tonight. Went perfectly. Night flight with all the lights, etc. and I had zero problems. I could just be the long hauls that present a problem, and there are a couple of things I can do about those to lighten the load. So things are back to where they were, although the "official announcement/inaugural flight is delayed a bit . I will say, all of the airports I have by them are spectacularly well done. It's getting harder to fly out of default airports more and more now. I figure LOWW and EHAM are next.
