Pretty interesting thread/announcement started by JV at Orbx today. Check here. It sounds very interesting, and they have dropped the term, "64-bit" in a few places (see the Project X part). I'm intrigued.
I've been pretty bad at ragging on JV/Orbx this past while on a few things, and maybe a bit too much so (I realized how negative my comments overall were getting which was one reason for my sabbatical recently). But this post by JV I think is a good one, and he gave Orbx a 7/10 on the "how-good-are-we" meter. I think that's a pretty accurate and honest evaluation. Yes, they HAVE to get their server issues sorted out to where you are getting better speeds (1 MB/S for a 10 GB package is just too slow), and he knows that, but overall, when you look at the quality of what they are putting out, it is hard to argue that there isn't bang for the buck with these guys. And, unlike a couple of other developers that I like to rag on pretty hard (and sorry, but that's as deserved today as it was in the past, if not more so), Orbx is always trying to up the bar and they DO make every attempt to fix things. Yes, JV is a bit too fast to jump on people when they have an issue, but of course some people aren't as diplomatic as they could be (and I have been guilty of that as well). I have learned, partly through FS but mostly through work, that if one approaches a glitch as a problem and not a personal affront that has been perpetrated directly against oneself, then you can often find an answer yourself, or with the help of the developer, in a much more timely fashion. I've actually had very few problems with Orbx material, when you look at how much I really have and what's entailed in getting it in and running, so I can't say that I've had to deal very much with their customer support, but when I have, it's generally been very positive. I know it's not always been the case with others, and I do think that both sides need to look inward a bit, although I know how incredibly frustrating it can be to buy something only to have it not work the way it should. However, Orbx generally is very good at trying to fix things given the time. I'm reminded of how distracting from the task at hand it was when I was trying to finish an altimeter calibration once and the owner was sitting there staring at me and asking me every minute (it seemed) if I was done yet. All that did was slow me down.
Anyway, I'm buoyed by what was said in the aforementioned post and I see every reason to be optimistic for 2017 in FS. That's the attitude I'm adopting now while trying to shed some of the negativity I've been spouting up until my sabbatical. I have a good ops (not exactly bush, but I like it), it seems stable (FINALLY!!) and it looks like it will be well supported by further scenery enhancements in the new year, plus of course, the coming of the 747-400F V3 (hey Don - I FINALLY have something I can support the Iditerod with!!!!! Now, where did I put the skis for that thing? ). Go have a read. It's pretty good stuff (PS - looks like a couple of new things coming for Norway - really pleased to see that!).
