I’ve found myself flying out of Yakutat lately in a Super Cub. It’s very versatile to fly people out into the wilderness for hunting, fishing, or hiking. There are several cabins around the area, and many small dirt strips. And if there isn’t a strip, the Super Cub is more than capable of off-airport landings on the tundra or river gravel bars.
This morning is overcast as usual, but the ceiling is reported at 3500 feet, so that gives me plenty of room to work with. No rain is forecast, so it’s a pretty good day as Yakutat flying goes.
I have a contract with a wilderness photographer that is currently staying at the Italio River cabin about twenty miles southeast of Yakutat. I flew him out four days ago. Today I’m scheduled to pick him up and fly him to Tanis Mesa airstrip, A69. It’s about another twenty miles further southeast of Italio River cabin.
On the ramp at Yakutat.
After takeoff, heading down the coast, keeping under the overcast.
Crossing over the rivers and tundra near Dangerous River and Harlequin Lake.
On final for the Italio river strip. This is not an "official" airstrip, but it's been worn down by many bushplanes using it, so it's pretty decent. The tundra tires will help with the bumpy parts.
After getting my client loaded up, we takeoff quickly for Tanis Mesa. It's clear flying as long as I stay below that overcast layer.
The Tanis Mesa airstrip is in sight. I'm getting ready to turn right and fly a downwind leg.
Final approach to Tanis Mesa.
Down and parked, I get my passenger unloaded along with his gear. I hang around for a short while, and then I'm off back to Yakutat. I'll be back in several days to pick him up for his trip home.
