Well, I'm back up north. I used to run Copper River Aviation out of Cordova, Alaska a long time back and since the owner kicked the bucket, I was asked to come back and take it over. I won't be here full time as I'm helping a friend out in Bar Harbor with his flight school doing charters for him, but I figure I'll about split my time between the two. CRA is rather a neat operation, running along the coast and inland up the Copper River. It is a very wild, lonely stretch of coastline, believe me, and it's rough to fly in. I guess that's why the air service has endured so long - not that many people want to fly here. I do.
Currently CRA's fleet consists of 2 185's (one on floats in summer, skis in winter; and one on tundra tires), a Cessna 206 and a DC 3; the latter of which is used to do charters to Icy Bay, Yakutat, Valdez, Kenai and Homer, plus runs up to the mines up the Copper River Valley. They also own a Cessna 404. The single Cessnas are based at the municipal airport and seaplane base in town while the DC 3 and 404 are based at the main airport.
Today's flight was dropping off a couple of people and supplies to Boswell, a research station on the north tip of Hinchinbrook Island, then picking up a couple of folks and some gear at Johnstone Point and bringing them back to Cordova. Weather was good... for that area . Some pics for your perusal:
At our base in town
On the roll
You can see the airstrip ahead. It's the bald spot running up the hill
Turning final.
Down and depositing my fare. I'd go out empty to Johnstone Point
Enroute to Johnstone
Living quarters are less than ideal, but what a view!!
Taking off from the none-too-long a strip at Johnstone Point
Arriving back - on final over town
Down and parked. Hmmnn, think I'll call somewhat. Just don't know who
See you next trip!
