Todd - that's just the point. It WON'T go BOOM if you let it spool up first 
. It'll get to around 15 or 20% N1 (I think it's N1, but it could be N2) and just sit there until the fuel is introduced. If you introduce the fuel too soon, you get fuel pooling and not enough air going through, and that is when you get the BOOM . There are others here who can explain it better than I, but that's the basic premise.
It's important to remember though - I'm talking manual starts like in the Lear. In the Mustang and Citation X, they are FADEC, so basically you hit the starter and wait. Everything is automatic.
