Title: A ground speed question.

A thing I've suspected about FS is the apparent ground speed as you approach the runway threshold. Assuming a no wind condition, your airspeed on short final is usually transitioning from final approach to level off, hence to flair. Now that I'm using both the Wilga and Storch, which have fantastically low 'over the fence' speeds, I still have this illusion of rushing along ground speed wise. In real life, in a Tcraft or Cub, you could almost reread the landing instructions as it got itself to the runway.

Hmmmnn, that's true. I just thought that it was normal, being as I have no real experience.
Cheers,
P.S. Where did you find a Wilga?

Actually it found me - Aerosoft, 21 bucks.

Thanks, I knew someone was building one but I completely missed the release.
It's so beautifully ugly that I gotta have one.

Getting back to your original question, I sometimes can see what you are seeing, but other times not. What I found makes a really big difference is the zoom setting you have. When I zoom back so as to better see the panel, I get a much greater feeling of speed. Normally I fly with a zoom setting of about 80% (as opposed to 50 to 60 on some aircraft during takeoff and landing, and even less than that with helicopters). When I stay up around 80% or so, aircraft with slower approach speeds do feel quite a bit slower to me than machines with higher speeds. When zoomed back though, especially just for takeoffs and landings, it feels like I'm going much faster, even in machines with slower approach speeds than it would otherwise.
Not sure if that really answers your question, but for me it's "yes and no".

I never thought of that. I don't recall what my zoom setting is, I'll have to check it out. Thanks.
Cheers,

Me neither. I've been adjusting with EZDOK for so long I'd forgotten about zoom. Thanks for the tip.
