At the moment, I'm using a GTX960 with 4gb of RAM but moving to XPlane has demonstrated a need for more horsepower so I shopped for a 1070/1080. Wow, the prices. The cryptocurency miners have gone wild - hopefully it's a balloon that'll burst but, in the meantime.......

Yeah, I was toying with upgrading my 970, and then I started reading about the cryptocurrency inflation. I'll just wait for now and hope it gets better. I read NVIDIA is starting to try to limit volume purchases to bring things down some. At least I don't NEED to upgrade, but I feel bad for someone that has to replace right now.

I didn't know about this. How is the mining business driving up the prices for graphics cards?

Mining bitcoin and other cryptocurrency requires lots of processing power. The processing power of the chips on modern video cards are apparently well-suited for mining. People are making "mining rigs" out of large numbers of video cards running together, so they are out there buying up all the stock, which is causing prices to skyrocket for the regular users who just need one for their gaming rig . -Scott

Thanks, guys. I had no idea. Hopefully the manufacturers will catch up soon.

Thanks, guys. I had no idea. Hopefully the manufacturers will catch up soon. As long as currency mining remains a profitable scheme, the price will continue upward and manufacturers are lovin' it. It'll be a while yet before any of us 'Tom, Dick, Dave or Harrys' will be able to afford one.

You're right, of course. I had forgotten greed.
So it goes.

Believe it or not, Nvidia has imposed sales restrictions on their dealers (good luck with that) - more importantly, on their own site they're advertising prices at or near the original MSRP. Of course they're out of stock on what I want but I put my name down to be notified so we'll see.

Dave; did I just see in the internet, over $550.00 US for a 1070?? That's a good deal at current pricing - if they're not already "out of stock". Newegg has a bunch of those, still advertised though they've been 'out' for quite a while. Nvidia says they'll sell me a 1070ti for $449 but I'll have to wait.
